Universal Hero Kamal Haasan made his comeback on the silver screen after a gap of four years with his latest film Vikram. It is the spinoff of Kamal’s 1986 film of the same name.
Plot:
Santhanam (Vijay Sethupathi) is a drug lord in Tamil Nadu. His container filled with drugs goes missing. To trace the man behind this robbery, an undercover cop Amar (Fahadh Faasil) gets appointed. At the same time, Amar also investigates the serial killings by masked men. An old drunkard named Karnan (Kamal Haasan) is connected to all these events. How is he connected to these incidents and what he does forms the major plot of the movie.
What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:
The premise of Vikram is quite interesting. The way director Lokesh combined the worlds of old Vikram and Kaithi is appreciable. The performances of Kamal, Sethupathi and FaFa are top-notch. The first half is quite more engaging than the second half. The action scenes will enthral viewers for sure.
The film is nearly three hours long. On top of that, there are multiple characters which come and go at every point. So, it is difficult for the viewers to keep track of everyone and everything that is happening in the film.
Performance of Cast & Crew:
Kamal has been phenomenal in his role. It is great to see him pull off this action role at the age of 67. Vijay Sethupathi is entertaining and deadly as the antagonist. The film proves why he is one of the gifted actors of this generation. Fahadh Faasil gets a lengthy role and he gave a sensational performance. Suriya will surprise us in his short little cameo.
Music by Anirudh Ravichander is one of the main assets of the film. He literally lifted most of the scenes with his stunning background score. Girish’s camera work is exceptional, especially in the action sequences. The production values are great. Editing could have been better as some of the viewers may get confused with the narrative of the film.
First Half & Second Half:
The first half of Vikram is mostly about the investigation and it is interesting. The interval bang and the setup before that scene were done well.
The second half is a bit lengthy and the makers should have trimmed a few scenes. Compared to the first half, the second half was a bit let down. However, the climax scene featuring Suriya will entertain audiences to the core.
Impressive:
All lead actors’ performances
Action scenes
Suriya’s cameo
Background score
Unimpressive:
Length
Complex narrative
‘The IBC News’ take on Vikram:
Vikram is one such action entertainer which has style and substance. Lokesh’s clever screenplay is complemented by the stunning performances of all actors. It is definitely a strong comeback film by Kamal. On the whole, audiences will not get disappointed after watching the movie.
One-Line Review:
Stylish action thriller with enough substance
