Master filmmaker Mani Ratnam has come up with his most ambitious & much-wanted dream project ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, an official adaptation of the epic novel of the same name, and has registered some huge records & numbers. Surprisingly, the film went on to register a new feat!
Although the film premiered on OTT – Prime Video, the film was still running in theatres and had the last leg of run last week. Needless to say, the film has achieved phenomenal numbers and joined ₹200 CR club domestically & ₹400 CR club globally very recently and the closing numbers are not short of it. According to the reporters, the film has ₹327 CR in India and ₹169 CR ($20.70 Million) overseas. Globally, the film registered ₹496 CR gross at the box office.
This comes as a big surprise to everyone as the film received a mixed response in various languages upon its release. The film achieved the rare feat of becoming the second highest-grossing film ever from the Tamil Film Industry, just behind Rajinikanth – Shankar’s ‘2.0’ which grossed ₹508 CR in India & ₹665 CR worldwide but it surpassed modern classic ‘Vikram’ (₹372 CR) by nearly ₹50 CR.
