Mani Ratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan: 1, also called PS-1, has been making the right noise since it went on to the floors. Adding more to the excitement, the makers arranged a grand trailer event yesterday, with two pillars of Kollywood, Kamal Haasan and Rajini Kanth attending as chief guests to the event.
Before the trailer launch, ‘superstar’ Rajinikanth shared a few interesting things about the film and the film’s director Mani Ratnam.
Rajinikanth praised Mani Ratnam for making a magnum opus like ‘Ponniyin Selvan’.
Talking about the film, Super Star said, “Earlier, when Mani Ratnam wanted to do the movie, I said, it was an amazing idea. He asked me if I read the book. I said no sorry, I haven’t. Then I thought I should give it a read and Mani Ratnam said there are 2500 pages. I laughed and I was like there’s no way I am reading it. Later, after a few years, I decided to give it a read. I was late, if Kalki was alive at the time I read the book, I would have fallen on his leg,” Rajinikanth said.
Interesting thing is that Rajinikanth said that he wanted to be part of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, but Mani Ratnam refused. Sharing about the same, Rajini said, ” I asked Maniratnam to let me play the role of Periya Pazhuvettiyar in the film. But he declined and asked me if I wanted my fans to scold him. He also added that this is not the role of a superstar like you as the screen presence is very less. Though I am desperate about the role, he somehow convinced me and made me not to be part of the film. This is what you call an excellent director. If it was anyone else, they would have agreed to my request. That’s the reason he is Mani Ratnam.”
