As the protests caused by economic crisis continue in Sri Lanka, its president Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Thursday emailed his resignation letter to the parliamentary speaker. The residence of Rajapaksa, who escaped to Singapore along with his wife on Wednesday, was stormed by thousands of protesters. According to the foreign ministry of Singapore, Rajapaksa and his wife are on a private visit to their country.
The protests have intensified in last one week and it has led for the President’s resignation, Parliament Speaker is likely to confirm the news Gotabaya’s resignation on Friday after going through the legal implications with country’s attorney general before it is formally accepted.
After declaring that he would step down, Rajapaksa silently fled to Maldives and from there, he moved to Singapore.
