CWG22: Three Medals on Day 2; Mirabai Chanu clinches GOLD in Weightlifting

Day 2 of the Common Wealth Games 2022 left the Indian Contingent happy. Three of our weightlifters bagged Medals at the ongoing tournament.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar clinched the silver medal in the men’s 55kg category weightlifting. Firstly, he surprised everyone with a lift of 113 kgs in the snatch event. Later, he lifted 135kg in his first attempt in a clean and jerk event. He failed in two more attempts but still made him put a total lift of 248 kgs on the board.

He was injured during his final two attempts but remained in second place.

On the other hand, Gururaja Poojary is the second weightlifter to bag the medal today. He bagged the bronze medal in the men’s 61kg category.

Initially, Gururaja lifted 114kg in his first snatch attempt and 118kg in his second. Later, in the clean and jerk round, the Indian weightlifter sealed his medal with a lift of 151 kg in his third attempt.

Mirabai Chanu’s GOLD
Mirabai Chanu who clinched Silver at the 2020 OIympic Games bagged a GOLD medal in the current Common Wealth Games. She is the defending champion and then repeated the history. She won gold in women’s 49 kg category for a total lift of 201 Kg, sets game record for the category.
