The government of Maharashtra decided to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that the decision taken by previous Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s government is illegal as he took that decision during a minority government.
Shinde added that his government will ratify the decision in the cabinet meeting presided by him. Thackeray’s government decided to rename these two cities in the cabinet meeting that was held on June 29, a few hours before Uddhav resigned from his Chief Minister’s post.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the government will bring a resolution in the assembly regarding the name changes of these cities and soon pass it to the centre for clearance. Aurangabad has been renamed Sambhaji Nagar, after the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s elder son Chhatrapati Sambhaji.
Eknath Shinde assumed the duties of Chief Minister on June 30th this year. BJP MLA Devendra Fadnavis was named his deputy.
