Srilanka has been making headlines for many months because of his economic crisis. Now amidst those, Despite people’s opposition, MP’s of Sri Lankan have elected prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new president of the country. Sri Lanka’s ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country last week and from Wednesday, Ranil is announced as the new president.
But, opposing him as president, people on the street vowed to continue their struggle and demanded his resignation, calling him an accomplice of the discredited Rajapaksa regime.
However, Ranil tried hard to distance himself from the past and said “The people are not asking us for old politics. I request Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and other Opposition parties including former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena to work together. We were divided for the last 48 hours. That period is now over. We have to work together now,”.
Interesting is that, in the 225-member House, Wickremesinghe got almost 134 votes, whereas his opposition member Alahapperuma got only 82, and Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the JVP party bagged just three.
