Russo Brothers, who made the highest grosser of Hollywood, Avengers: End Game, are now back with their new outing, The Gray Man. This action thriller premiered on Netflix today. Let’s see how it is.
Story :
CIA’s Agent Six (Ryan Gosling) is on an assignment which eventually makes him a prime target to the ruthless mercenary Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans). How Six manages to deal with his foes forms the main crux of the film.
What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:
The Gray Man is made on a budget of $200 million and is the most expensive Netflix film to date. As it is an action thriller, there are plenty of scenes that satisfy the fans of the genre. One would be amazed by the action choreography in the film. Some of the one-liner dialogues are witty and smart. The sequences featuring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans were amazing as well.
Barring the action sequences, the rest other aspects of the film are very bland and boring. There is nothing in terms of storytelling in this movie. Even the actors don’t get a chance to perform and are only limited to doing stunts all the time. The predictable story and screenplay make the film boring throughout the proceedings.
Performance of Cast & Crew
Ryan Gosling has the charm and physique but he may not fit into the action genre. Somehow, he feels like a misfit in the lead role. Though he tried his best, Ryan fails to impress with his performance in the movie. Chris Evans stands out as the antagonist. This is undeniably one of his best works. It is good to see him playing such grey-shaded roles in movies like this one and Knives Out. Dhanush gets a good role and he gave his best. After Evans, he will be remembered for this film. Definitely, a good Hollywood debut for the talented Indian actor. Ana de Armas impresses with her stunts but has nothing potential to offer in terms of acting.
The writing of The Gray Man is very bland. We have seen many Hollywood action thrillers like these. The action choreography is great. A couple of action scenes can be termed as the best action scenes in Hollywood this year. The cinematography is brilliant and so are the production values. The music is loud and forgettable.
First Half & Second Half:
The Gray Man takes some time to get into the story and thus, the first hour seems a bit boring. Apart from the scintillating action sequences and the scenes of Dhanush and Chris Evans, both parts are equally bland and unimpressive.
Impressive:
Chris Evans
Dhanush
Action Sequences
Production Values
Unimpressive:
Lack of strong story
Lethargic Screenplay
Loud BGM
No proper use of the big star cast
‘The IBC News’ take on The Gray Man:
On the whole, The Gray Man fails to impress us with his flat narration and predictable story. The action scenes are good but they need to be watched on the big screen and not on a laptop or a mobile phone. If you are an action film junkie, you can try watching it.
One-Line Review:
Great star cast wasted in a silly film
