Former UK Finance Minister and banker turned politician Rishi Sunak was finally elected as the new Conservative leader and he will become the next Prime Minister of UK. His rival Penny Mordaunt, who could not secure the required 100 nominations from her fellow MPs, declared complete support to Rishi and made way for him to become new PM of United Kingdom.
Earlier last week, Liz Truss had announced her resignation as Conservative Party leader on 20 October 2022 in just six weeks after taking up following top chair in UK. Considering mounting pressure from fellow MPs and economic turmoil in the wake of mini budget, Liz had to step down.
Rishi Sunak, son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, is all set to become the new UK Prime Minister and he will the be first British-Asian PM and first Hindu PM of UK at 42. Also, he is the youngest PM in modern times and he is inundated with the congratulatory messages from India – PM Modi also tweeted, “Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership.”
Anand Mahindra said ‘In the 75th year of India’s Independence, we’re going to see a man of Indian origin as PM of the UK.’
