Ireland registered a victory against England by five runs in a rain-affected game held tonight. A superb effort from the Irish bowlers made their team to be in a dominant position when the rain stopped play. Eventually, they were declared the winners as per the DLS method.
While batting first, Ireland lost opener Paul Stirling’s wicket pretty early. However, a stunning 82-run partnership between skipper Balbirnie (62) and Lorcan Tucker (34) set a nice platform for Ireland to score a big total. However, England’s bowlers came back stronger in the latter half of the innings and started scalping wickets at regular intervals. As a result, the run rate dipped low in the final overs. Eventually, Ireland got all out for 157/10 in 19.2 overs. Mark Wood (3/34) and Liam Livingstone (3/17) scalped three wickets each. Sam Curran (2/31) got two wickets.
England got a shocker during the chase as opener Jos Buttler got out right on the second ball of the innings. In the third over, another opener Alex Hales went back to the pavilion. Ben Stokes got out in the sixth over. The score was 29/3. Dawid Malan (35) and Harry Brooks (18) tried to make a big partnership. But right when they are settling in the crease, Brook got out. In-form Malan was sent back in the 14th over. When Moeen Ali (24*) and Liam Livingstone were at the crease, the rain stopped play. England’s score was 105/5 in 14.3 overs at that time. As the rainfall intensified, the match was called off. England was 5 runs behind the par score as per the DLS method and thus, Ireland was declared the winner.
