Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud takes oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India

Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India. He also happens to be the 50th Chief Justice of India. He took the oath this morning in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years, i.e till November 10, 2024.

Chandrachud was preceded by Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who served the position for a short period of just 74 days. Justice Chandrachud took the duties as a Supreme Court Judge on May 13, 2016. Since then, he has been a part of many landmark judgements passed by the Supreme Court, including the Ayodhya land dispute issue and the right to privacy issue.

Justice Chandrachud is the son of the late Justice YV Chandrachud, who still remains to be the longest-serving Chief Justice of India. He was in the position for seven years. DY Chandrachud took oath as the Chief Justice 44 years after his father.

Justice Chandrachud did his under graduation in Economics from St Stephen’s College. He pursued an LLB from Delhi University and an LLM from Harvard Law School in the USA. He earlier served as a judge in the Bombay High Court and also as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
