The IBC News Rating
Director Amar Kaushik, who earlier made successful films like Stree and Bala, is now back with his third directorial, Bhediya. Starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles, this horror-comedy has hit the screens today. Check out our review of this movie.
Story:
Bhaskar (Varun Dhawan) is a road contractor in Delhi. He gets a contract in Arunachal Pradesh. In order to make a highway through the forest area, Bhaskar moves to Arunachal along with his cousin Janardhan aka JD (Abhishek Bannerjee) and friend Jomin (Paalin Kabak). One day, Bhaskar gets bitten by a wolf. Veterinary doctor Anaika (Kriti Sanon) gives him medicine. After that, Bhaskar shape-shifts into a wolf at night and starts hunting a few people. What happened to Bhaskar? Why is he shape-shifting as a wolf? Why is he killing only a set of people? To know the answers, you have to watch the film.
What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:
Amar Kaushik is an expert in blending horror and comedy seamlessly. He proved it with Stree. He once showed us his prowess with Bhediya. He manages to keep all horror and comedy scenes entertaining and engaging.
Though the storyline is interesting, the screenplay falls flat. The first half takes time to establish the world of Bhediya and that establishment is pretty boring. In some scenes, the comedy goes overboard and makes the audience feel cringy.
Performance of Cast and Crew:
Varun Dhawan steals the show in the entire film. He is a pro in comical scenes and we know it. He has also done well in the other scenes. The way he sculpted his body to become a werewolf was amazing. His effort can be seen on the screen. Kriti Sanon is decent but her character lacks depth. Abhishek Banerjee is hilarious and manages to entertain the viewers whenever he is on the screen. Paalin Kabak and Deepak Dobriyal are also brilliant in their roles.
Writer Niren Bhatt and director Amar Kaushik created the world of Bhediya in an interesting way. But a cliched narrative makes things boring and disengaging at some points. Jishnu Bhattacharjee’s cinematography is spell-bounding. Sachin-Jigar’s music is okay but not memorable. He captured the beauty of Arunachal Pradesh very well. The VFX work is amazing too. The editing could have been better though.
First Half & Second Half:
The first half takes time to establish the characters and location of Bhediya. Apart from a few comical scenes, nothing really stands out in the beginning. The interval point is good and raised expectations for the second half.
The second half is the soul of the film. But even there, things become slow and predictable in most places. It is the comedy which keeps audiences remain in their seats throughout the film.
Impressive:
Comedy
Abhishek Banerjee and Varun Dhawan’s performance
Cinematography
Unimpressive:
Predictable Screenplay
Lengthy Scenes
No novelty
‘The IBC News’ take on Movie:
Bhediya deals with the man vs nature concept. We have seen many films with this theme in the past but the shape-shifting concept makes Bhediya an interesting film. The screenplay is flat and predictable. But you can give it a shot for comedy scenes and the climax.
