According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression which is in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday. Once formed, it shall be addressed as Cyclone Mandous. It is expected to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal, the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh by December 8. It will continue to move west-northwestwards during the following 48 hours.
In the purview of this, IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for 13 districts in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, and 12 districts on Friday. The alert, indicating very heavy rain, has been issued to Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on December 8. The districts of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem have been issued an orange alert on December 9.
“Depression concentrated into a Deep Depression and lay centred at 0530hrs IST of 7th Dec, 2022 over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal about 770 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 830 km southeast of Chennai.” India Meteorological Department shared the news on their Twitter handle.
