Cobra Movie Review: Boring Thriller

National Award winner Vikram, is back with yet another interesting film Cobra. This film created a great deal of buzz among fans as it features him in numerous unrecognizable avatars. Directed by R Ajay Gnanamuthu, this action entertainer has hit the screens all over today. Let’s see how it is.

Storyline:

The plot revolves around a genius mathematician Madhiazhagan AKA Madhi (Chiyaan Vikram) who is also a killer. He is so intelligent that he doesn’t leave any trace, but has contacts all around the globe. He also kills a British king and escapes unhurt. He dons multiple getups and has multiple passports so he can travel and kill people. Meanwhile, Scotland Interpol official Aslan Yilmaz ( Irfan Pathan) is after the assassin who killed the British king. Also, there’s Judy, a mathematician and a criminology student, who finds a common link between the Odisha Chief Minister’s murder and the British king’s killing. Will Aslan and Judy succeed in finding Madhi? Why Madhi is doing all these things forms the crux.

What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:

The film offers a lot of scope for thrills here and there. Vikram steals the show with his fabulous acting. The interval block is good and sets the platform for an intriguing thriller and action ahead. But except for these points, everything remains boring. Mainly the flashback that comes in the second half is overdrawn and feels unnecessarily dragged. The dramatic moments involving hallucinations creates more confusion, and tests the patience of the audience instead of making the audience excited.

Performance of Cast & Crew:

This is a Vikram show all the way and he shines in all the get-ups he acted in. Be it his body language, dialogue delivery and walking style, he is a treat to watch whenever he is on screen. Apart from his act, Srinidhi Shetty provides the glamour in the meaty role she gets. Special mention to Irfan Patha. He stands out as the best in his limited role. Mirnalini Ravi is good in her role. Meenakshi Govindarajan as a police officer doesn’t look so good. Roshan Matthews’ character is powerful at starting but later goes down the hill. KS Ravikumar appears briefly, playing a part in his routine style.

Coming to technical aspects, the strong points are the production values that include great locations and neat cinematography. AR Rahman’s BGM steals the show but songs miss the glory. Editing could have been a lot better as it requires more trimming. Coming to director, Ajay Gnanamuthu has picked a fresh backdrop but he totally failed to narrate it in an exciting and entertaining way.

First Half & Second Half:

First half thrills us here and there. Interval block leaves us stunned and also creates expectations for the second half. But it is downhill from the start of the second half. From an exciting thriller, Cobra becomes a boring film in the second half. Mainly, the long flashback kills all the excitement and tests our patience.

Impressive:

Vikram Performance
Interval Block
Production Values

Unimpressive:

Second Half
Complex narration
Flash Back

‘The IBC News’ take:

Apart from interval blocks and few thrilling elements in the first half, Cobra has nothing much to offer. The film deserves to be praised because it gives Vikram his most ambitious film in recent years. But apart from Vikram acting and Interval block, the film has nothing to entertain us. Infact, Cobra could’ve been a far more effective thriller if it wasn’t so long.

One-Line Review:

Old-fashioned boring thriller…
