Uttar Pradesh is erupting with protests against the government on the rape of two minor Dalit sisters. After the two minor Dalit sisters were found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, police found out that they were allegedly raped and strangled before being hanged.

The officials have added six names as accused in the charge sheet, under the sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012.

The police identified the six accused as Chotu, Junaid, Suhail, Hafizul Rehman, Karimuddin and Arif. One of the accused was caught by the police officials.

Lakhimpur Kheri SP Sanjay Kumar confirmed that both girls were raped before the murder. “Junaid was arrested following an encounter on Thursday morning and he has a gunshot injury in one of his legs,” he said.

The family members of the girls have sought the death penalty for the accused.

UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak ordered for strict action against the accused. “The government will take such an action that the souls of their coming generations will also shiver. Justice will be given,” he told news agency ANI.

“This incident strongly exposes the claims of the government in the matter of law and order and women’s safety etc. in UP,” tweeted Mayawati, the former chief minister of UP.
