The IBC News Rating

One of Kollywood’s best combos, Selvaraghavan-Dhanush is now back with a new flick, Naane Varuvean. Starring Dhanush in the lead role, this psychological thriller has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it turned out to be.

Story :

Kathir and Prabhu (both played by Dhanush) are twins. They get separated in childhood in an unavoidable situation. Later, Kathir disappears and Prabhu moves to Chennai. 20 years later, Prabhu gets married and becomes a father too. All of a sudden, his daughter Satya started behaving abnormally. Her condition worsens with each passing day. On the flip side, even Kathir enters Prabhu’s life once again in an unexpected way. What happened to Satya? How Kathir is connected to Prabhu’s family crisis? To know these answers, you have to watch the film.

What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:

Director Selvaraghavan sets up the story in a very interesting way. Right from the beginning, he keeps us glued to our seats. The first one hour is highly interesting with horror and thrilling elements. Even the interval bang is superb.

Things start getting boring in the second half. The flashback episode could have been shown in a better way. The climax is illogical and boring as well.

Performance of Cast & Crew:

Dhanush is the heart and soul of this film. Even though both his characters are complex and highly contrasting from each other, Dhanush pulled them off effortlessly. That proves his acting talent. The kids who played his children also performed very well. Indhuja and Elli Avram were okay. Prabhu and Yogi Babu are decent.

Selvaraghavan wrote the first half very well but he could have worked more on the second half. He completely fails in the final hour of the film. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is one of the major assets of the film. Veera Soora background score is chilling. The cinematography is excellent and the editing was good.

First Half & Second Half:

The first half of the film is filled with horror elements. When Selvaraghavan is in his zone, no one can stop him. His vintage persona can be seen in the story and filmmaking style of the first half. Thus, it is highly engaging and sets our mood for the second half.

The second half falters big time. Though Selvaraghavan continued his vintage filmmaking style, the storytelling took a diversion in this half. It is lengthy, boring and tests the patience of the audience. If it was made better, the film would have been a great watch for sure.

Impressive:

Dhanush’s performance
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score
First Half

Unimpressive:

Boring Second Half
Lengthy scenes
Predictable sequences

‘The IBC’ News take on Movie:

On the whole, Naane Varuvean has a very good first half spoiled by a boring second half. Nevertheless, it makes a decent watch, especially with Dhanush’s power-packed performance and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s stunning background score.
