After Ponniyin Selvan’s success, Karthi came up with his new film Sardar in no time. This PS Mithran directorial hit the screens today. Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan played the female leads in it. Here is the review of it.
Story:
The story begins in 1988 when a spy (Karthi) goes into exile. Cut to the present, we get introduced to his son Vijay Prakash (Karthi) who is an attention-seeking police officer. He happens to investigate the case of activist Samira’s (Laila) death. That leads him to face an evil businessman (Chunky Panday). When Vijay Prakash is stuck in the clutches of the bad forces, his father Sadar (Karthi) comes out of exile. What happened to Sardar all these years? How he saved his son? These factors form the main crux of the film.
What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:
The story seems familiar but the execution of Sardar is engaging. The screenplay keeps us engaged in the proceedings throughout. While the younger version of Karthi is chirpy and comical, the older version is mature, rugged and rough. The scenes of both characters are very entertaining. The romantic track with Raashi Khanna is very flat and cliched. We have seen such romantic tracks in many films before and thus, it is quite boring. Even the other heroine Rajisha Vijayan doesn’t have anything significant to do in the film and thus, even her scenes are very boring.
Performance of Cast & Crew:
Karthi pulls off the film on his own. He is so good in both characters. The way he pulled off two contrasting characters proves his acting prowess. Kathi is the main highlight of the film. Raashi Khanna and Rajisha Vijayan look good on screen but both of them don’t have meaty roles in the movie. Chunky Panday is decent as an antagonist. Laila is good. It is heartening to see her back in films. Rest others performed within their limitations. Writer and director PS Mithran came up with an interesting screenplay. Thus, the film keeps audiences invested in the proceedings. The message is also delivered very well through the intriguing screenplay. The background score by Sam CS is another highlight of the film. The songs are forgettable though. The cinematography is apt. The editing could have been better. The production values are great.
First Half & Second Half:
The first half is quite routine with the younger version of Karthi leading the story with his comical antics. The scenes are predictable and stereotypical. The interval bang is good and raises expectations for the second half. Compared to the first half, the second half is engaging. The older version of Karthi pulls off things on his own shoulders. The twists and turns are managed well in the second half. The climax is predictable but decent.

Sardar is an action drama that comes with engaging narrations and decent twists. Though the screenplay is engaging, it falls short at times and bores audiences. On the whole, Sardar is an average and decent outing, which can be watched once.
