The IBC News Rating

Starring ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay in the lead role, Varisu is one of the big releases of Sankranti this year. The trailer gave a promising impression that the movie will be an action family drama. How an ignored son unites the family when turbulent times hit them forms the plot of the film. The movie also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Vijay’s partner, R. Sarathkumar as Vijay’s Father, Jayasudha as Vijay’s mother and Prakash Raj as the main villain. Other actors include Srikanth, Shaam and Yogi Babu among others.

Story :

Rajendran (Sarath Kumar) a business tycoon is suffering from a terminal illness and wants to hand over his empire to the most capable son. Jai(Srikanth) and Ajay(Shaam) are the top contenders while Vijay(Vijay) stays away from all this as he disagrees. Right before dying, Rajendran realised that his elder sons aren’t who they pose to be and thus makes Vijay the heir. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Varisu-Review
Vijay Thalapathy and Rashmika Mandanna

What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:

It’s the Thalapathy show that anchors the film Varisu. The family elements in the film strike the right cords. There are no cringe family dialogues as the emotions are relatable to the audience. Thaman provided a cracker of a show that elevates the movie to a further level. The blend of drama, love, sentiment, action and comedy works out convincingly. There are many fan-pleasing moments which will be a treat to Thalapathians. As expected, the plot clearly feels like a mix of many Telugu films and the story is predictable. There is nothing new to offer with this plot. Only Vijay, sentiments and some comedy is the plus point.

Performance of Cast & Crew:

Vijay gives a terrific performance in this action family drama. His screen presence is unmatchable. The energy he delivers through the screen reverberates among the audience who will enjoy his performance thoroughly. Prakash Raj does great as the villain. Rashmika does justice to her role. All other actors play their part well in the limited space they get.

Vijay Thalapathy and Director Vamshi Paidipally

Director Vamshi Paidipally once again proves his mettle as a commercial director who can deliver all elements required in a commercial film. The synthesis of action, drama, love, sentiment and comedy is well executed by him. Thaman’s electrifying music adds fun and energy throughout the watch.

Production values are top notch and each frame is presented richly. Sets erected for songs speak of the high production values, which is also necessary for a big-budget film like this. The house they live in is one of the most lavish ones you will see in a Tamil film. There are many one-liners in the film that haven’t been explored by Vijay in recent times. The cinematography is beautiful and the editing is racy thus avoiding the lag element.

First Half & Second Half:

The first half takes its time to establish the world of Varisu. The family emotions and connections are in prime focus in the first half. The fun and joyous side of Vijay is shown nicely. There are 4 songs in the first half itself but it blends with the narrative. The interval block is impressive.

The second half takes the revenge and redemption mode as Vijay tries to reconnect with his family and rebuild their empire. Action sequences in the second half steal the show. Even though 2nd half is predictable, Thaman’s music in the climax scene engages us.
