Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin raised objection over Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s proposal to construct reservoirs across the Kosasthalaiyar river, near Mukkalakandigai and Katharapalli villages in Chittoor district.

Stalin wrote a letter to Jagan Mohan Reddy regarding the same. He said that the construction of these reservoirs will affect the people who are living in and around Chennai. He stated that people residing in Chennai and the nearby areas depend on this river for drinking water and to a small extent for irrigation.

Stalin requested the government of Andhra Pradesh to immediately revoke the decision of constructing these reservoirs. Kosasthalaiyar river basin covers a total area of 3,727 sq km, out of which 877 sq km. lies in Andhra Pradesh and 2,850 sq. km. lies in Tamil Nadu.

Stalin stated that already Poondi reservoir was constructed in Tamil Nadu and is a vital source of drinking water supply to the Chennai Metropolitan Area. He said that the construction of any new reservoirs across the river, its tributaries or sub-tributaries will affect the inflows into Poondi reservoir, which eventually affects the drinking water supply to Chennai city.
